Patients are our priority

A trained medical assistant beside your surgeon.

Our role is to support your surgeon and help safeguard your operation with another qualified doctor in theatre.

01

Safeguard

Patient safety is the central reason we assist. Some people call it another set of trained eyes. We know it is more than that.

02

Efficiency

Our doctors have spent significant time in orthopaedic surgery and work cohesively with your surgeon to support an efficient operation.

03

Meeting us

We attempt to meet patients just prior to the procedure. Sometimes this is not possible or anaesthetic medication means you may not remember us.

Frequently asked

What patients usually want to know.

The practical details: who performs the operation, what the assistant does, how fees work and what information is needed for a quote.

What is a surgical assistant?

At OrthoAssistant, surgical assistants are qualified doctors who provide an extra set of skilled hands during your operation to support your surgeon and help maximise your outcome.

Who performs the operation?

Your surgeon remains responsible for your operation. Your OrthoAssistant doctor works with the surgeon at multiple points during the procedure.

Is there a fee?

Yes. OrthoAssistant doctors charge a separate assistant fee, similar to the way your surgeon and anaesthetist bill separately.

What do I need to do?

Your surgeon will organise one of our doctors for your operation. We send invoices to your health fund directly and then send you the out-of-pocket invoice after your operation.

I was told there will be a nurse assistant. Is that different?

Some nurses complete further study to assist in operations. OrthoAssistant surgical assistants are doctors with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery qualifications and years of registrar-level surgical experience.

Can I request an exact quote?

Yes. Email the date of surgery, surgeon's name and any known item numbers. We can make enquiries with the practice manager and prepare a quote. Please allow 3 to 5 business days. Quotes cannot be guaranteed because surgery can change for individual clinical reasons.
